What is external versus internal martial arts?

There is always a bit of confusion as to what is meant when practitioners talk about the internal art versus the external art. Though many of the moves in each are the same or similar, itis in the execution of the movement that one can see the difference. But what is seen does not share all of the differences as most are within the body itself.

With the internal style of martial arts, the emphasis is placed on being centered, correct posture, softness, slow movements for Tai Chi. Bagua, also an internal art moves faster and incorporates the iconic circle walking, but the body still remains soft in executing the movements. Stillness in motion, motion in stillness is a saying frequently repeated to the student and is valued as an overriding principle. Movements are slower than the external styles and synchronized with the breathing, allowing the body to remain agile and whip-like.

The expression of the external in martial arts is exemplified in Kung Fu, Tai Kwon Do, Jeet Kun Do, etc. in that the movements are fast and explosive with physical strength and agility. The original focus was on fighting an opponent and, in modern days, transitioned into physical exercises and competitions.
