The Siu Lum Way

The Siu Lum Academy follows the training techniques developed by Grandmaster Dr. Steven L. Sun. Each class begins with a series of Qi Gong routines to improve the body’s flexibility, strength and endurance. Once these exercises are completed, the students divide into separate groups based on what they are learning. New students are introduced to basic movements like the walk and turning the ball for Tai Chi, 30 movements for Kung Fu, and circle walking and 8 animals for Bagua. Each student is encouraged to practice what they are learning until they reach a level of proficiency before they are introduced to the next aspect of the art being studied. As each set of individual movements is learned, students also learn to connect them to make a continuous flowing form. This allows each individual to progress confidently with a better understanding of what they are learning.

As students’ progress through the ‘open hand’ movements, weapons are introduced to develop balance, technique and connection to the body. Control of the weapon, especially the longer ones like the spear or Kwan dao, develops strength and coordination, improving overall performance and body/energy development.

Eventually the student will progress to the two person sets and the applications of the techniques learned previously. In Kung Fu this would include sparring. In Tai Chi and Bagua this would include Tui Shou or Push Hands.

These 3 aspects - open hand, weapons and two person sets, are the 3-legged stool of martial arts. Siu Lum Academy provides a unique path to achieving this through its structured learning approach.
